High Court judge George Odunga has temporarily stopped the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) from demanding over Sh443 million in unpaid taxes for a five year period from a senior city lawyer.

According to lawyer Prof Tom Ojienda, the taxman had added up all of his monies in his four bank accounts, together with unpaid fees and deposits from third parties and lumped them as his net income that is subject to taxation.

Prof Ojienda, in his suit protesting the tax demands, claims the demand by KRA is unreasonable and illegal.

Justice Odunga granted him the reprieve by stopping KRA from seeking the monies until the case is heard and determined.

According to the lawyer, he was required to pay Sh378, 682, 140 by October 5 as per a September 5 tax assessment done on his accounts at Stanchart and Barclays banks.
