K24 journalist reports death threats from political aspirant

A journalist based in Embu has recorded a statement with the police, alleging that he received death threats from a parliamentary aspirant.

Mr Dickson Macharia, a cameraman with K24, says Mbeere North parliamentary aspirant Patrisio Njiru threatened to harm him if he didn’t vacate Embu in the next two weeks.

Speaking to the press after recording a statement, the journalist said the threats were made at an entertainment spot in Embu town on Thursday night.

Mr Macharia said the politician, who is an Embu County Executive member, accused him of writing propaganda material on social media, with an aim to tarnish his name.

On Friday, Kenya Union of Jounalists (KUJ) weighed in on the matter.

“KUJ will work with police to push for prosecution of the aspirant,” charged KUJ secretary general Erick Oduor.

“We don’t condone harassment of journalists. If he has complaints against Macharia, let him report the matter to the Media Council of Kenya for action to be taken. We will defend Macharia in court if he sues for defamation.”

INVESTIGATIONS

The parliamentary aspirant allegedly told Mr Macharia that he was a licensed gun holder and the said publications were painting him in bad light ahead of the forthcoming Jubilee Party nominations and subsequent general elections.

“I was seeing off a friend when the politician confronted me and asked me why I was writing offensive material on social media. He insisted that I was doing it with a County Assembly official. What hurt me most was the threat on my life and my family,” said Mr Macharia.

Embu West acting DCIO George Etyang said his office had already kicked off investigations and would ensure the journalist’s safety during the electioneering period.

“We don’t take chances with security matters, we will ensure thorough investigations. We will investigate and forward the file to the Director of Public Prosecution,” said Mr Etyang.

Director of Digital communication at State House Dennis Itumbi also said he had met with local authorities over the matter.
