Karua: I did not declare support for Uhuru’s presidential bid
Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua has said she did not declare her support for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election next year.
This comes a few days after she told Kirinyaga residents as she campaigned for the governor’s seat to vote for the President.
Ms Karua said she did not have a problem with President Kenyatta’s re-election.
Speaking on Citizen TV on Wednesday, Ms Karua said she will not necessarily support President Kenyatta and has left each of her party branches to make their choice of candidate for the presidency.
She said the 30 branches were free to choose President Kenyatta, Cord leader Raila Odinga, ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi or any other candidate.
Ms Karua said the Kirinyaga party branch and others in the Mt Kenya region had made clear their decision to support President Kenyatta, which she had no problem with.
“But as a party leader, I should be hesitant to make any statements that take away the choice of other branches. I am going to respect that, I am not going to be boxed in,” said Ms Karua.
PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE
On her own choice of presidential candidate, Ms Karua said Kenyans should wait and see who she will campaign for in 2017.
“Being categorical on who I will vote for will be infringing on my party’s rights,” she said.
She said while campaigning for the governor’s seat in Kirinyaga County, she will not hold any joint campaigns with the Jubilee party as they will also be having their own gubernatorial candidate.
Further Ms Karua said she will not bow to pressure from some politicians from the Jubilee side who are asking her to fold her party to join the Jubilee Party.
She said her main goal is to serve the people of Kirinyaga as their governor and deliver quality services.
She further reiterated that she will continue being critical on the fight against corruption despite the involved individuals being in the government or in the opposition.
“Narc Kenya will continue rooting for that and telling the government of the day, you asked for the mandate to do this work, kindly do your work, if you don’t you will have to give way for others to do that,” said Ms Karua.
