Karua: I’ll not support DP Ruto in 2022 – VIDEO

Veteran politician Martha Karua has declared that she will not support Deputy President William Ruto in the 2022 general election.

The former Gichugu legislator and Justice minister made the declaration during a live interview on NTV’s popular political talk show Side Bar on Wednesday night.

She said: “No (while shaking her head). It’s my choice. It’s called choice in democracy. And I am being upright. I will not support him (William Ruto).”

Ruto, the country’s current Deputy President, has repeatedly declared intention to take over from President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022, in the event Kenyatta’s victory in the October elections is upheld by the Supreme Court.

Karua, who lost in her bid to become Kirinyanga governor in the August election, appeared for the interview hours after her petition against the eventual winner Anne Waiguru’s victory was struck off by a High Court.

DISMISSED ON A TECHNICALITY

The court dismissed Karua’s petition on a technicality.

Karua had accused her rival of engaging in electoral fraud, claiming’ “we thought we had addressed electoral theft through the Krieglar report (but that isn’t the case)”.

“Electoral fraud is accompanied by impunity which fuels corruption,” she said.

The feisty politician also vehemently defended her position in 2007 when she was the face of former President Mwai Kibaki’s defenders team during the disputed elections.

“I was Kibaki’s unapologetic agent in 2007. I was what Orengo is to Raila right now. I was asserting myself in a room packed with Raila supporters, Kibaki supporters at the time were scarce.”
