KDF officers to fortify security at Daystar University
The management of a private Kenyan university has enlisted the services of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to man its premises, in a bid to protect students and staff from terrorist attacks.
The Nairobi News has seen a communique from the institution’s management to the students confirming the deployment of security agents.
“Following the heinous attack that happened at the Garissa University College, the Daystar University management has resolved to hire the KDF to reinforce security,” the email, sent to all students, reads in part.
Students at the institution say the officers could be “up to 30” who are seen patrolling the premises since Thursday, in a move widely interpreted as reaction to the terrorist attack which left 148 people dead and several more injured at Garissa University College on Thursday.

“The KDF are here in much more numbers than has been the case over the past few months, but there is no cause for worry or alarm as yet. In fact we now feel much more secure,” a student based in the University’s Athi River campus told Nairobi News.
The university has also contracted Mwenda Mbijiwe, a security expert and TV commentator, to train the students and staff on issues relating to terror.
The “must-attend” training will be held in Athi River and town campuses on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Daystar is a private University and home to thousands of both Kenyan and foreign students. The institution is a renowned high cost institution that has nurtured high profile personalities.
