Kenya beat hosts Seychelles in friendly match
Bobby Williamson recorded his first victory as Harambee Stars head coach as the national team beat Seychelles 2-0 at the Linite Stadium in the island’s capital of Victoria.
Sofapaka defender Collins Shivachi and youngster Vincent Odongo accounted for the two goals for a result that will boost the team’s morale ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games qualifying match against Botswana next month.
The national team has suffered several loses since the Scot took over from Belgian Adel Amrouche late last year, the last being a 4-1 aggregate loss to Egypt in an All Africa Games qualifier.
The team’s technical bench picked its squad from the national junior side that featured the likes of Michael Olunga (Gor Mahia), Enoch Agwanda (Sofapaka) and Timothy Otieno (Gor Mahia).
The Kenyan team is scheduled to play another friendly match against the hosts’ junior side on Monday morning before taking the three hour flight back home on Tuesday afternoon.
TUSKER FLOOR CITY STARS
Meanwhile, centre forward Jesse Were bagging a brace as Tusker made it two wins on the trot with a 2-1 victory over Nairobi City Stars in a fiercely contested Kenyan Premier League match at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.
At the Awendo Green Stadium, Samuel Odhiambo scored that enabled hosts Sony Sugar to beat Ushuru FC 1-0.
In an early kick match at Nyayo, Chemelil Sugar posted a similar win over Kenya Commercial Bank. David Ojuang powered headed home Collins Kisuya well swung corner kick in the 42nd minute to hand Mike Mururi’s men a priceless away win.
The defeat was a severe blow to the bankers who succumbed to their second straight loss following a 3-1 hiding by Bandari in their last outing.
Despite the victory, coach Mururi was unimpressed with the performance of his centre forward Meshack Karani.
“I will have to work on Karani’s finishing which was quite appalling. If not for his wastefulness, we would have won the match by a wider margin,” Mururi lamented.
In the second match at the same venue, Tusker survived a scare as a re-energized City Stars had them on the ropes for large spells of the second half.
The brewers bossed the game in the first half, only to fade out in the second period. Joseph Sakwa scored a consolation goal for his side with a beautiful strike in the 69th minute and later forced Tusker goalie Farouk Shikahlo to fine save in the 84th minute with a fierce long range drive.
Tusker’s however had Were to thank for win. The team captain led by example netting the match opener in the third minute from a defensive lapse before doubling the lead in the lead from the spot in the 37th minute.
