This Kenya Power staff demanded Sh3k bribe for reconnection. Big mistake!


A Kenya Power meter reader found himself in deep trouble after soliciting for a Sh3,000 bribe before reconnecting electricity to a tenant.

Mr Maingi Matheka appeared before Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Henry Nyakweba on Friday to face charges of allegedly requesting and receiving Sh 3000 bribe to reconnect electricity at client’s residence.

The offence was allegedly committed on September 20 at Mishomoroni area in Kisauni sub-county.

REQUESTING BRIBE

He was charged with requesting an advantage and one charge of receiving an advantage, all contrary to sections of the Bribery Act no 47 of 2016.

In the first count, prosecution claimed that as a meter reader, he requested a financial advantage of Sh 3,000 from Abdurahman Maro to reconnect electricity.

In the second charge of requesting a financial advantage, the accused allegedly received the requested amount from the client.

NOT GUILTY

The accused, who was arraigned before senior resident magistrate Henry Nyakweba, pleaded not guilty to all the three charges.

He was released on a Sh 200,000 bond with a surety of similar amount and an alternative cash bail of Sh 100,000.

His case is scheduled for pre-trial on November 11, 2016 and hearing will commence on February 1, 2018.
