Kenya Sevens storm into quarters in Las Vegas


Kenya’s national rugby sevens team are through to the quarter finals of the main cup in the Las Vegas Sevens after beating Russia and Portugal on Day One.

Benjamin Ayimba’s men held off Russia 24-21 in the first match before seeing off Portugal 38-0 in their second Pool A match.

Humphrey Kayange scored his 150th and Kenya’s 1,500th sevens try in their win over Russia while Collins Injera scored three times to move within three tries of Ben Gollings and second place in the all-time leading try scorers behind Santiago Gomez Cora.

Kenya’s other opponent in Pool A, New Zealand, also breezed into the quarters with easy wins over Portugal and Russia.

The back to back champions from Wellington and Sydney New Zealand picked up where they left off in round five of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, scoring 80 points and conceding just one try.

In the first match they hit Portugal 42-7 before thrashing Russia 38-0. Kenya and New Zealand, who both have 6 points, will meet late on Saturday night in a match that will determine who tops the pool.
