Kenya’s famous volleyball family bereaved

One of Kenya’s celebrated sporting families is mourning the loss of a sibling under unclear circumstances.

Volleyball queens, Asha, Everlyne and Violet of the famous Makuto family have lost their elder brother, Leonard, who was discovered dead in Kakamega County early this week.

Asha and Violet ply their trade with local volleyball champions Kenya Pipeline, while Everlyne is based in France where she turns out for top flight club Chamalieres.

It has been reported the deceased, who was based in Mumias, was found dead after going missing for two days. The family has refused to discuss the matter because it is a matter under police investigations.

BURIAL

Burial is set for Friday (today), which means Everlyne and Violet – who are part of the national women volleyball team competing at the World Olympic qualification matches in Puerto Rico – will miss the funeral.

The Malkia Strikers play Colombia in their first match of the tournament on Friday evening, before engaging Algeria and hosts Puerto Rico respectively, in their next assignments in San Juan.

Everlyne and Violet – who was voted the country’s best blocker at the just concluded Africa Club Championship in Tunisia –  were only informed about their brother’s death while enroute to Puerto Rico for national duty.

“RIP brother till we meet again,” Everlyne posted on Facebook while at Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport on Wednesday.
