Kenyan woman who lied about assault in India to be deported

A Kenyan woman who lied about being attacked by a group of Indian men will be deported according to the Uttar Pradesh Police.

Maria Burendi had claimed that she had been attacked as she travelled in a taxi by a group of locals in the Greater Nodia area of India.

Ms Burendi claimed that a group of about five men pulled her out of a taxi and assaulted her as she was on her way to a friend’s house.

RECANTED STORY

The Kenyan, who was a student at Mahatma Gandhi University, later recanted her story after investigations by police revealed that the incident never happened.

According to the Uttar Pradesh Police who investigated the incident, Ms Burendi allegations were false after eyewitness accounts and electronic evidence did not corroborate her sequences of events.

The police found out that her student visa had expired and immediately began initiating deportation orders.

“We investigated the matter later in the evening yesterday and found that the woman was under distress due to personal issues. She had cooked up this story and we would like to offer our apologizes to the Police and people,” said Charles Kennedy, vice-president, Nigerian Citizen Welfare Association.

The police declined to charge the 24 year-old with providing false information in a bid to ease tensions between Africans and locals in the area.

Frederick, a representative from the Kenyan high commission, said that the embassy was content with the investigation.

SATISFIED WITH INVESTIGATION

“We are satisfied with the police investigation into the matter and the police have assured us that they will not press any charges against the woman,” said Frederick.
