Technical hitch causes massive countrywide power outage

Kenyans woke up on Saturday morning, August 6 to a massive power outage that has affected the entire country.

Kenya Power in a statement said a technical hitch in the mainline has caused a countrywide outage and it’s working to restore electricity.

“We are experiencing an outage affecting most parts of the country. Efforts to restore supply are currently ongoing,” the statement read.

In North Rift, Western, South Nyanza, Mt Kenya and Central Kenya regions, power was restored at 10am while Kenya Power said it was in the process of restoring supply in other parts of the country.

Flights at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) were delayed for over an hour.

Passengers flying to Eldoret, for instance, were delayed for one hour as their 6:30 am flight departed at 7:20 am.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) attributed this to a failure by the automatic generators to automatically provide alternative power thus affecting operations at the airport.

“Our generators which are meant to automatically provide alternative power failed. We manually rectified the problem,” said the agency.
