Kenyans react to global recognition on ‘The Shade Room’

Following Kenya’s celebration of its 59th year of independence yesterday, December 12, 2022, the international blog site ‘The Shade Room’ duly recognized the country with a series of posts that saw Kenyans jubilate in the comments section.

The Shade Room (TSR) is a media company, founded by Angelica Nwandu in March 2014. Instagram-based, The Shade Room offers celebrity and trending news on an hourly basis, predominantly within the African American community.

The 59th independence celebration, which took place at Nyayo Stadium was also acknowledged by many Kenyans, including well-known entertainment figures like Njugush, Crazy Kennar, Awinja, Terrence Creative, Moji Short baba, and Chipukeezy to mention just a few.

Among the myriad of activities planned out for the day included a mock relay race among the comedians, alongside Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala which wildly amused Kenyans and netizens at large.

The revered athlete lined up alongside the top content creators namely Njugush, Awinja, Terence Creative, Professor Hamo, and Crazy Kennar in the 400 x 100m relay race. Many had expected Omanyala’s team to shine but that didn’t happen as the entire race was just for comic relief and not a serious relay.

One other amusing moment of the day was when comedian Chipukeezy the comedian didn’t get Omanyala’s name correctly while mentioning him before everyone at the stadium. Chipukeezy referred to the award-winning sprinter, known by the whole world, as Fred instead of Ferdinand.

Regardless, joining in on the celebration, ‘The Shade Room’ shared posts among which Sauti Sol, made of one of Kenya’s greatest artistes was acknowledged as being a big part of what it means to be Kenyan, something that touched the hearts of many.

Here are some of the reactions by Kenyans on ‘The Shade Room’ Instagram page;
