Kenya’s sheng web series to be screened at Toronto Film Festival


Kenya’s Sheng language will be heard in this year’s Toronto International Film Festival after a Kenyan TV series was one of the five selected worldwide to be screened at the festival.

Tuko Macho, a web series, chronicles the story of Biko, a vigilante who fights crime in Nairobi.

The Facebook exclusive series allows viewers to decide the storyline for the episodes by voting for characters to be executed by the vigilante.

Its creators, Nest Collective, say the series is about telling Nairobi’s stories.

Jim Chuchu, the director of the series, said they are elated at being the only African series to be screened at the Toronto Film Festival.

Executive Producer George Gachara said that it is important to value art and creative work in an age where youth are defying pressure from parents and pursuing their dreams
