Kenya’s Shujaa storm to Safari Sevens quarters

Two-time champions Kenya Shujaa easily glided past Burundi and Italy on Saturday to storm the Cup quarterfinals of Safari Sevens rugby tournament at Safaricom Stadium, Kasarani.

South Africa-based William “Lomu” Ambaka touched down a hat-trick of tries as debutantes Frank Wanyama and Alvin Otieno managed a brace to help Shujaa see off Burundi 59-0.

Wanyama’s double saw Shujaa beat Italy 37-0 in their next match.

Shujaa, who won the title in 2000 and 2013, were due to meet Western Province later yesterday to decide Pool ‘A’ winners after the South African side blew away Italy and Burundi 50-0 and 71-0 respectively.

Kenya’s other side, Morans, posted mixed results when they stunned Zimbabwe 12-10 before losing out to Mike Friday’s Samurai International 12-29.

Morans then beat Uganda 36-0 but failed to reach the Cup quarters.

Samurai eased through to the Cup quarters with a match at hand against Zimbabwe after they had crushed Uganda 33-0 in their opening Pool ‘C’ duel.

The battle for the second qualifying slot in Pool ‘C’ was between Morans and Zimbabwe. The latter recovered after losing to Morans to floor Uganda 26-10.

Newcomers England Saxons and returnees Spain won two matches each to sail through to the Cup quarters from Pool ‘B’.

Saxons mauled Zambia 36-14 and Brazil 12-5 while Spain thumped Brazil 12-5 and Zambia 31-5. Saxons were set to play Spain later yesterday to decide Pool ‘B’ winners.
