Riots in Kibera over title deeds

By JUSTUS WANGA December 3rd, 2013 1 min read

Rowdy youths in Kibera on Tuesday evening barricaded a road near Olympic Primary School to protest the planned issuance of title deeds to the Nubian community by President Uhuru Kenyatta this coming weekend.

The youths were angry at area MP Ken Okoth who they accused of betraying them by accompanying Lands minister Charity Ngilu to a meeting with elders from the Nubian community earlier on Tuesday.

They claim the meeting’s agenda was to prepare for the  issuance of title deed over the weekend.

Kibera residents have in the past argued that title deeds should be issued to all communities  living in the area rather than targeting a particular ethnic group.

They have also accused Ms Ngilu of actively lobbying for the Nubians’ case and sidelining other residents who also qualify for title deeds.
