Kidero agrees to negotiate parking fees

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has agreed to negotiate with striking matatu operators and taxi drivers over the increased parking fees.

The Governor’s climb down came with the condition that the operators remove the vehicles they had abandoned on roads.

“We are willing to negotiate with them but only if they remove the vehicles blocking the roads first,” Governor Kidero told journalists moments after meeting with representatives of matatu owners at City Hall.

The operators however refused Mr Kidero condition and continued camping outside City Hall. A section of them chanted “Kidero must go”.

The city woke up to a crippling transport crisis on Wednesday as matatu operators and taxi drivers blocked roads to protest the increased parking fees.

Under the new parking fee regime, 14-seater matatus are to pay Sh5,000, 41-seater matatus to pay Sh8,000, while 41 seater matatus are to pay Sh7,250
