Kidero awards 300 students with scholarships worth Sh24 million

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has disbursed scholarships worth Sh24 million to 300 students in the city.

This is part of the Governors’ executive bursary that started in 2014 in addition to the bursary scheme administered by the 85 MCA’s.

“Three hundred needy, poor but bright children from the 85 wards in Nairobi County have been identified as beneficiaries of this fund. These students reflect the face of our great nation,” said Dr Kidero.

“Each of these students will be educated by this fund until they complete their secondary education. Beneficiaries will receive enough money from the kitty to meet all their tuition needs.”

“This is a departure from the existing bursary arrangements where no consideration was given to specific case needs and a flat rate of Sh5,000 was allocated to each child without caring what would happen to them in subsequent terms.”

The decision to award more money was part of recommendations by the taskforce on education  that pointed out very low transition rates from primary school to secondary school among city children.

“The City County Government is committed to ensuring needed and poor students are supported in order for them to pursue further education,” said Education County Executive, Christopher Khaemba.
