Kidero backtracks on order banning handcrafts in CBD

Handcart operators will continue operating in Nairobi’s central business district following an order by governor Dr Evans Kidero.

Addressing handcart operators Monday who had gone to seek his audience, the governor said the handcarts would be allowed to continue operating in CBD as modalities on their operations are being worked out.

SUSPEND ORDERS

“I have today suspended the order to shut you out of the CBD and you will continue your operations as we work out modalities for operation. Those of you whose handcarts have been damaged will be compensated by the county,” Dr Kidero told the operators.

“We are at an advanced stage of formulating a non-motorized transport policy for the city that will address the problem of informal business community in the city.”

Among the radical measures unveiled by the County and the National Government on Monday 9th March, 2015 includes the removal of roundabouts, pumps and potholes to tame congestion and ease the traffic flow within the city.
