Kidero defends transport chief on mass transit deal

Governor Evans Kidero has termed as personal, allegations levelled against besieged Transport Executive Evans Ondieki.

Members of the County Assembly on Tuesday passed a motion to sack Mr Ondieki, a day after the Governor had written to the Speaker Alex ole Magelo saying that Mr Ondieki had not broken any law to warrant his removal.

“The motion of impeachment contemplated by article 75(2) of the Constitution and Section 40 of the County Government Act is irregular as there is no allegation that the Executive Committee Member has breached the values and principles of the Constitution and/or breached any written law which is mandatory before impeachment proceedings would commence,” said Dr Kidero.

The Governor called for an impartial tribunal to hear out Mr Ondieki.

Members of the county assembly debating the motion had claimed that Mr Ondieki’s docket was under-performing.

They accused him of failing to deliver on upgrade of five roads per ward as he had promised.

They further accused him of allegations that he had claimed county representatives took bribes to frustrate the bus rapid transit system project.

A select committee will now investigate the claims and present a report to the House in nine days. If the claims are substantiated, the Assembly will vote on whether to approve the resolution requiring the executive member to be dismissed.
