Kidero endorses renaming of Limuru Road to Prof Maathai

Nairobi Governor Dr Evans Kidero has said Limuru Road will be renamed to Prof Wangari Maathai road.

This, he said, would be a perfect way to honour the late Prof Maathai, a renowned environmentalist who won the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her dedication in environmental conservation.

Mr Kidero’s pronouncement comes days after a member of the Nairobi City County Assembly filed a notice of motion to have the road named after the Nobel laureate.

Karura MCA Kamau Thuo filed the motion at the county assembly seeking to rename the road as a tribute to the Nobel Prize winning-environmentalist who campaigned for the preservation of the Karura forest.

The motion will go through the first reading next week.

Limuru road cuts through section of Karura forest.

“The section Limuru Road, which begins at the Thika Road Junction in Ngara all the way to Ruaka, will be named after Prof Wangari Maathai,” Kidero said.

KARURA FOREST

He said it was Prof Maathai, through her Green Belt Movement, who fought gallantly to ensure that Karura Forest was not grabbed.

Speaking on Sunday at Bahati PCEA Church in Nairobi where he had accompanied Deputy President William Ruto and other Jubilee MPs during the unveiling of the church’s strategic plan, Dr Kidero also pleaded with Nairobians to stop dumping waste.

“The garbage we dump aimlessly always leads to blockage of drainage systems. With the coming El Nino rains, we need to be more careful in the way we dispose our waste” he said.

“I want to urge Christians to be better managers of the environment and stop dumping waste anyhow,” added Dr Kidero.

He said his government was clearing drainage system in the city in preparation for the predicted El Nino rains.

The governor also challenged Nairobians to open drainage systems near their homes rather than wait for the county government to do so.
