Kidero to hire ex-convicts for jobs at City Hall
Inmates at Nairobi West Prison have a reason to look forward to a bright and productive future following a decision by the Nairobi County government to offer them employment.
This follows a memorandum of understanding that will see the Nairobi City County Government (NCCG) inject manpower from the released inmates.
While announcing the deal on Saturday, Nairobi governor Dr Evans Kidero said he had been impressed by the rehabilitation work at the corrective unit and that he had agreed with prison commissioner to sign a memorandum of understanding next week.
“We’ll recruit released inmates into our work force through the agreement. We’ll do this to ensure the released inmates are engaged and therefore avoid crime in future,” said Kidero.
DEMOCRATIC RIGHT
Kidero, who was speaking while addressing faithfuls at Nairobi West Prison SDA church, also urged the inmates to exercise their democratic right of taking part in the forthcoming general election in August.
He also asked them to be better people once they step out of jail adding that the constitution recognizes inmates as Kenyan citizens who should take part in the election process and choose leaders to represent them.
“All of you who are registered voters must therefore exercise this democratic right. We want you to be better people out there and be represented by better people as you deserve,” Kidero said while addressing the inmates, whom he later presented with Easter holiday gifts.
At the same time, Kidero also urged political leaders eyeing various seats within the County and across the nation to preach peace as they sell their agenda to the electorate.
“We discourage violence, we want peaceful campaigns as they give out their plans to make our county and country at large a better place,” he added.
