Kidero impeachment motion in limbo as Nairobi MCAs play soccer in Kisumu
Debate on Governor Evans Kidero’s impeachment motion was left in limbo on Tuesday after only one member of the Nairobi County Assembly showed up for the Tuesday session.
Only Parklands ward representative Jaffer Kassam arrived early in the Chambers, on the day the motion was meant to be debated.
Assembly Speaker Alex ole Magelo ordered the bell to be rang for 10 minutes and only Minority leader Abdi Guyo entered. He, however, did not sit as he was “inappropriately dressed”. Several others were seen loitering around City Hall.
Members are required to be in official suit and a tie while inside the chambers, but Mr Guyo wore jeans, sneakers, a shirt, tie and a coat.
The speaker had on Tuesday directed that Dr Kidero’s impeachment motion be introduced on Tuesday after a stand-off over office space between the executive and the assembly.
Speaking to journalists, Mr Guyo said that the members had gone to Kisumu for intercounty sport games hence the quorum hitch.
He said that they were more than 100 who had travelled to participate in football, handball and the tug-of-war.
MACHAKOS MCAS FLEW TO TANZANIA
Just last week, an impeachment motion against Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua flopped after more than 30 MCAs flew out to Tanzania.
Mr Magelo said that the business of the day will be moved tomorrow.
A motion of impeachment has to be debated within three days, failure to which it has to be dispensed with.
In the motion sponsored by Viwandani MCA Samuel Nyangwara, Governor Kidero is accused of failing to control the county’s ballooning debt, now standing at Sh42 billion, irregular award of tenders and abuse of office.
