Kidero warns against voter importation as registration exercise commences
Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has raised concern over voter importation during the ongoing mass voter registration by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Dr Kidero, who spoke during the launch of the registration exercise at KICC, said leaders should desist from voter importation as the person voted for does not represent the need of the people in the area.
Dr Kidero said that those who come to the city to vote cause insecurity as chaos erupt as a result of resistance by the residents.
“We have heard of massive voter importation which in most cases brings insecurity as was the case in Kariobangi during last year’s voter registration when two youth groups clashed,” said Dr Kidero.
REGISTRATION PROCESS
The Nairobi Governor said that it was illogical for a leader to have people transported in large numbers to vote for him yet they do not know the area.
“How do you vote for a governor, senator or an MP or an MCA in an area you know nothing about?,” posed Dr Kidero.
The governor called for modernized registration process, which he says will weed out ghost voters and dead people from the voter register.
“In this day of technological advancement, voter registration should be part of wider program of digital transformation, one which is easy to find, always available, quick and simple to use,” said Dr Kidero.
