Anti-riot police disperse Kikuyu campus students

Anti-riot police on Thursday dispersed University of Nairobi students who were demonstrating at Kikuyu campus to demand for more buses to transport them to their colleague’s burial.

The students were dissatisfied by the one 67-seater bus provided by the university to ferry them to the burial in Murang’a.

They insisted they needed more buses for event set for Friday.

The late Francis Maina Mwangi jumped to his death during the Sunday morning stampede at the campus.

Maina, a third year Bachelor of Education student, died after jumping from his hostel room on fifth floor following the explosion of an underground electrical cable that students mistook for a terrorist attack.

A total of 167 students were injured in the resulting stampede.

Maina had been described by his campus friend Dickson Mwalimu in an earlier interview as a reserved person who loved politics.

The University had on Monday stated that it will support the family of the departed student in defraying part of the funeral expenses.
