According to the school’s public relations manager Ms Julia Thitai, the child had been left behind sleeping by her mother, the school’s matron, when she escorted older pupils for breakfast.

“She was young and therefore was left behind sleeping by other pupils. Unfortunately she died when fire started,” she said.

The school has around 900 pupils, among them 43 boarders, she said.

Over 600 pupils study in the West Wing, whose dorm caught fire, while other 300 study in the East wing, said Ms Thitai.

Pupils who board at the school were picked by their parents after the school was closed for investigation.
