Kisumu’s most wanted gangster killed in hail of bullets

Police in Kisumu county on Tuesday evening killed a suspected robber as he led a three-man gang to rob a M-Pesa shop in Manyatta estate.

The 33-year-old Chris Omondi Okello, alias Koskei, was one of the most wanted criminals said to be behind a spate of robberies in the lakeside city.

During the 7 p.m operation, a homemade pistol and 38 rounds of ammunition were recovered. Two of Mr Okello’s accomplices escaped.

Police have so far gunned down five suspected robbers and arrested nine others in the last 10 days. The crackdown on gangs comes days after a visit by Inspector General Joseph Boinett who asked police to “wipe out” the criminals in the lakeside city.

Police reports indicate that four of the five were killed while undertaking robberies, while one was gunned down as he ran away from police along the Kisumu-Busia Highway.

The nine will answer to charges of robbery with violence and for being accomplices of crime, the police report added.

“With the assistance of the public who give us helpful tip-offs, the police will run these criminals out of town,” County police commander Nelson Njiri said on Wednesday.

On Saturday, Mohammed Hussein Sharrif, alias Mzito, who police also described as one of Kisumu’s hardcore criminals was gunned down in a shootout at Riat after he was trailed for days.
