Kitui politician arrested for impersonation

Militonic Mwendwa Kitute, a politician who contested for the Kitui East parliamentary seat, has been arrested for impersonation for the second time in seven years.

Kitute, was arrested in the early hours of Saturday 20 April 2024 by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and has spent the past two nights at Kilimani Police Station in Dagoretti North Sub-County, Nairobi.

He is accused of impersonating EACC officials and issuing fake integrity clearance certificates.

“An armed and dangerous criminal who has been defrauding Kenyans by impersonating EACC detectives and issuing fake Integrity Clearance Certificates to job seekers for a fee in the names of top EACC officials has been arrested,” a statement from the commission said.

He is currently being driven to the Integrity Centre by EACC officials and will later be taken to Milimani magistrate’s court from 8.30 am.

Nairobi News has established that he was on the radar of the EACC but managed to evade arrest in Nairobi in the middle of last week, 17 April.

This prompted EACC officials to hatch a plan to arrest him while he was in the comfort of his home in Kitui County, where he usually spends weekends.

During the raid on Saturday morning, he was caught with a firearm and seven mobile phones.

Investigations are still ongoing and the seven phones have been sent for forensic examination.

This is not the first time that Kitute has been arrested.

In September 2017, just one month after the general election, he was re-arrested outside court.

His re-arrest then came shortly after he had been granted bail in a forgery case. He was arrested while enjoying a meal with friends and family along the Kitui-Nairobi highway.

He was arrested again in a separate case of attempted murder.

In 2017, he contested the same parliamentary seat on the ticket of the National Alliance Rainbow Coalition (NARC).

In the attempted murder case, he was arraigned before Principal Magistrate JM Munguti and charged with attempting to end the life of Wanjohi Ng’ang’a Gichamba by pointing a gun at him at Kitui River Petrol Station.

This happened on August 28, 2024.

He denied the charge and was released on a cash bail of Sh50,000.
