KOT reacts to Jubilee’s purge on critical rights groups
Kenyans on Twitter were an uncontrollable lot on Tuesday as they expressed mixed reactions to the deregistration of non-governmental organisations critical of the Jubilee regime.
On Monday, NGOs Coordination Board boss Fazul Mahamed sent out a notice on the de-registration of the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) for failing to account for sh1.2 billion, operating illegal bank accounts and failing to pay tax.
A day later, Mr Mahamed ordered for the investigation of African Centre for Open Governance (AfriCOG) in a letter to the Director of CID Mr Ndegwa Muhoro following claims that the body has not been registered under the NGOs Coordination Act.
KOT had this to say on the matter.
Fazul just realised AfriCOG is not registered after all those yrs then he must very inefficient and poor at his job

After subduing critics, Kamuzu Banda threw most of his former allies into prison. Lest you forget. Kenya needs human rights defenders.

Deregistered? How? They weren't registered to have been deregistered. Is it wrong for AFRICOG to follow the law?

In fact,” Fazul states, #AfriCOG is and continues to operate as a charitable organisation in direct contravention of Section 22(1)

I thought the Jubilee regime clearly won the #ElectionsKE. Why then, it's apitite & upsurge crackdown on rights groups #KHRC & AfriCOG?
— Ogeke Araka (@ogekearaka) August 15, 2017
so from 2013 its now that you are realizing its not registered.

Its a no brainer the Gov want to shut down AFRICOG and KHRC. They took sides during the #ElectionsKE2017 and lost. Choices have consequences

How can you 'deregister' a NGO that you have accused of 'operating without registration'!? The state is targetting AfriCOG & KHRC.

This is Kenya my friend there is nothing you cant do esp when you are loaded with cash

In 2013, @AfriCOG described itself as an NGO, in papers filed at the Supreme Court against a case I had filed, so they have never registered pic.twitter.com/AsDv6V9JP5

Did the NGOs Coordination Board just conveniently discover AfriCOG & Kenya Human Rights Commission's supposed issues? It's a brave new world pic.twitter.com/a1X19nhmQo

Fazul Mohamed's illegal purge continues. This is to try stop filing of presidential petitions by Friday. @AfriCOG next on line. #KHRCSiege pic.twitter.com/EOcaYdYl0K

There are only two bodies in Kenya capable of filing petitions in court against @IEBCKenya, AfriCoG and #KHRC. Both have been deregistered
