Koth biro semis under way

January 3rd, 2014 1 min read

Koth biro Cup enters the semi-finals this weekend as the race for honours hots up.

1000 Street takes on Makongeni Youth on Saturday while newly-promoted Nairobi Provincial League side Intercity faces off with Black Mamba on Sunday.

Kick off time for both matches is 3pm at the Ziwani Grounds.

Dandora-based 1000 Street is the tournament’s most successful team with 15 titles.

They beat perrenial rivals Umeme 2-0 in the quarters. David Ojuang and Peter Juma scored the goals.

Match abandoned

Their opponents took a different route to the semi-finals after their quarters clash against Nyoi aborted.

The match was abandoned in the 80th minute after Nyoi fans invaded the pitch.

The game was tied at 1-1 when Makongeni scored the winner.

Nyoi fans ran onto the pitch in protest, claiming the goal was off-side.

Following the disruption, Makongeni were awarded the match.

Nyoi, which Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama once played for, have won the off-season tournament five times.

In the second semi-final, Intercity will be hoping to use the match as preparation for their upcoming Provincial league assignments.

The team qualified for the last four after defeating Future Stars 3-1 in a tense quarter-finals encounter.

In another tie, Black Mamba upset the fancied Opitos FC 3-0 in the quarters.

The tournament received a boost after pay television provider GOtv sponsored the championship.

“We are privileged and excited to partner with GOtv. This is a big step towards moving the tournament from politicians to professionalising it. To achieve our goal of developing talent and keeping the youth busy the tournament requires sponsors,” said organiser Rowbow Ochola.
