Landlady charged with burglarising tenant’s house over rent arrears

A landlady in Nairobi is facing charges of burglary and theft after a dispute with her tenant over rent arrears.

Matilda Njoki Ndungu has been accused of breaking into George Wambugu Mute’s house and stealing household goods worth Sh153,800.

DEFAULTED PAYMENT

She is said to have committed the offence in Zimmerman in Kasarani on July 12, 2020 jointly with others not before court.

But she denied the charges before chief magistrate Heston Nyaga of the Makadara Law Courts and claimed Mute is her tenant and left the keys with her.

She said Mute has defaulted payment of rent and owes her Sh25,000. The suspect said the complainant is using the case to settle the rent dispute.

Ndungu said Mute disappeared for weeks while looking for money to clear rent arrears but only returned with Sh2000.

CELLPHONE THEFT

In a separate case, Ndungu was charged with stealing a cellphone worth Sh30,000.

She was accused of conspiring with another suspect yet to be arrested for stealing the phone from Michael Kitondo on July 11.

But she claimed her drinking buddy framed her after she turned down his sexual overtures.

The accused was freed on different cash bails amounting to Sh70,000. Hearing of the cases starts on October 1, 2020.
