Leopards fight over cash storage

AFC Leopards officials and members on Tuesday evening engaged in a public spat over where and how to “store” the Sh 5.5 million raised in a fundraiser at a Nairobi hotel.

Chaos erupted towards the tail end of the function at a Nairobi hotel, which was graced by senior political leaders from Western Kenya including club Patron Cyrus “CJ” Jirongo and Vihiga Governor Moses Akaranga.

It all started when Jirongo “requested” those present to allow a Nairobi businessman and former club treasurer Amin Walji to keep the cash “overnight”.

This suggestion was immediately shot down by heckling youths, who instead demanded the loot to be stored at some safe within the hotel at a fee.

“We just don’t trust Walji, he is a man who rarely keeps promises,” one of the those present.

CLUB AFFAIRS

Walji was the chairman of the “caretaker committee”, that was set up to run club affairs by former Chairman Allan Kasavuli last month.

Jirongo, who had contributed Sh 700,000, was forced to accept to the will of the majority.

Other contributors included President Uhuru Kenyatta who sent Sh 1million in cash and Akaranga gave Sh 300,000. Walji pledged a contribution of Sh 500,000.

This amount is expected to go a long way in settling the Sh 12 million debt owed to players and the technical bench by the club alongside meeting other expenses.

Akaranga also promised to marshall some 200 people who will each contribute about Sh 100,000 monthly to help sustain the club in the middle term, even as the search for a sponsor intensifies.

Leopards, who are placed fourth on the Kenyan Premier League table, will commence second leg fixtures away to Thika United on Saturday.
