Leopards patron blasts club officials for misusing funds

AFC Leopards patron Tim Wanyonyi has blasted a section of the club’s officials who solicit for money from politicians in the name of supporting the team, but end up pocketing the amount.

Wanyonyi who is the member of parliament for Westlands, was speaking during an exclusive luncheon he had hosted for the team at a Nairobi hotel.

“Some club officials have been approaching my colleagues for money to help the team but then pocket it. The other day the players were detained in Mombasa because of a Sh 70,000 debt, yet one of you (officials) was given Sh 200,000, but never used it then, this is sad,” Wanyonyi said.

Wanyonyi offered about Sh 500,000 to the team and technical bench, and a separate amount of Sh 57,600 ($600) to coach Zdravko Logarusic. He also warned a rival faction from attempting to stage a coup.

He was referring to a caretaker committee handpicked by former chairman Allan Kasavuli when he resigned last week.

The committee is led by Nairobi businessman Amin Walji, the club’s former treasurer who opposed and eventually lost to Wanyonyi during the last parliamentary elections.

Also present at the function was the club’s elected organising secretary Timothy Lilumbi and assistant secretary Asava Kadima.

Leopards are currently staring at a financial crisis, thanks to the withdrawal of Mumias Sugar as team sponsors at the start of the year.

The team is placed fifth on the 16-team Kenyan Premier League with 22 points from 14 matches.
