Leopards players dupe Opwora of Sh 500,000

AFC Leopards players last week duped a rival faction of the club’s management led by Matthews Opwora of Sh 500,000, then later went back on a promise to play in a league assignment in the FKF Premier League, Nairobi News can exclusively reveal.

The incident happened at a restaurant in Roasters along Thika Road, and comes in the wake of the ongoing court battle involving Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Limited, over the management of the top flight league.

According to a number of players who attended the meeting that Nairobi News has spoken to, Opwora, who is rivaling the current club’s establishment led by Chairman Allan Kasavuli, reached out to a couple of senior players through phone, and invited them to the said meeting.

PROMISE OF GOODIES

At the gathering, the deep pocketed businessman, who was accompanied by a senior official of the federation, reportedly asked the players to ‘defect’ from the Kenyan Premier League to the FKF Premier League, a move he insisted will come along with several ‘goodies’.

“Each of the players present (at the meeting) was offered and received Sh 17,000, but we did not sign for the cash. In return we were to board a night bus and travel to Mumias to feature in a FKF league match against West Kenya Sugar,” said a player who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The player then added: “But then we (the players) decided against traveling. The main reason being, the money offered was very small.”

Sources say Leopards players were enticed into considering this offer, in the wake of well publicized financial shortcoming that are almost pushing the club into bankruptcy.

The playing unit has not been paid their salaries for January and February, on top of match winning bonuses for six matches.
