Leos reenergised by Pan Africa boost

Strathmore Leos captain Brian Nyikuli is confident that his team will retain their top spot in the ongoing Kenya Cup Rugby tournament after Pan Africa Life announced a Sh8 million sponsorship on Thursday.

Nyikuli said the deal, which will now see the team change name to the Pan Africa Strathmore Leos, has motivated the team as they chase their maiden Kenya Cup title.

“We are very grateful to the sponsors for coming on board because this will take off some pressure off the school, and also give us a the necessary push to go ahead and churn out results,” Nyikuli said during the launch at the Strathmore Business School.

“I feel greatly motivated, and I want to assure our rivals that we are not going to relinquish the top spot,” he added.

ULTIMATE PRIZE

The Lions have been among the top four finishers since they first participated in the championship four years ago, and were on course to bagging their title last season only to lose out to Nakuru at semifinals.

Pan Africa Chief Executive Officer Kennedy Muriithi challenged the team to put forward their best performance and aim for the title.

“You have been performing well in this tournament and for that I congratulate you. However, I urge you to drop the average team title and gun for the ultimate prize which is the national trophy,” Muriithi said.

The Sh8 million sponsorship includes money for all the team’s expenditure including kitting, training equipment and medical expenses for a period spanning two years.

A further Sh1 million will be channeled each year into the academic scholarships of the players. Strathmore currently tops the Kenya Cup table on 15 points with three matches played.
