Police couple charged with soliciting Sh30, 000 bribe

A police couple was on Tuesday charged with soliciting a bribe.

Corporal Florence Beth Murevu and Constable Reuben Nyaruri Oisebe, both from Isiolo police station,   denied the charges and were released on a personal bond of Sh200, 000 each.

The husband and wife appeared before Meru Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochieng.

The court was told the two were arrested on July 1, 2015 by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission detectives and released on a police bond of Sh10, 000 each after recording a statement at the EACC regional offices in Isiolo.

SOLICITING FOR BRIBE

They were charged with four counts of bribery.

In the first count, the two were accused of soliciting a bribe of Sh30, 000 on diverse date between June 22 and July 1.

The prosecution said they solicited a bribe from Mr Silas Mwithali M’mauta so that they could release his Toyota Probox that was held at the police station.

They are also accused of receiving the bribe.

Corporal Murevu, who is a criminal investigation officer, is facing another charge of dealing with a suspect’s property.

The court heard that on July 1 she was caught with Sh25,400 that she obtained from the complainant.

Constable Nyaruri, a regular police officer, was also charged with concealing of evidence.

DENIED CHARGES

The prosecution told the court that he concealed Sh15, 000 which he had knowledge would be used as evidence in the investigation of the offence.

However both husband and wife denied all the charges.

Through their lawyer Kiogora Mugambi, they pleaded with the magistrate to release them on a personal bond.

Prosecutor Moses Waliaula told the court that he was not opposed to the bond application by the defence lawyer.

“The prosecution is not opposing the defence lawyer’s plea for the accused to be freed on bond. l believe since the accused are both police officers and who live as a husband and wife, they will cooperate with the court” said Mr Waliaula.

The case will be mentioned on July 29 and heard on December23.
