Lupita to play mother of chess girl in ‘Queen of Katwe’ movie


Actress Lupita Nyong’o will be playing Harriet Mutesi, the mother of Phiona Mutesi the queen of chess in a new movie based on the book Queen of Katwe.

Lupita who made the announcement during the Oscar red carpet interview with The Washington Post said she is working on a new project called Queen of Katwe with Vanity Fair and Amelia director Mira Nair.

A spot check by Nairobi News on imdb.com which is the site for The Internet Movie Database (abbreviated IMDb) an online database of information related to films and the book’s site queenofkatwe.com revealed that indeed Lupita will star in the film.

The release date for the movie that is still in its pre-production stage is set to be in 2016 and the actor who will play Phiona Mutesi’s character in the film is yet to be announced.

UGANDAN CHASE PLAYER

Phiona who is a Ugandan chase player has her story featured in the book Queen of Katwe authored by Tim Crothers.

Her rise from the slums to become an amazing chase player has been an inspiration to many African girls.

The film director, Mira Nair has been hard at work in Uganda trying to pull things together according to the Queen of Katwe website.

Mira also directed that great movie showing Robert Katende’s life, “A Fork, A Spoon and A Knight.”

Robert is the founder and director of the Sports Outreach Chess Academy and has been Phiona’s chess coach. British actor David Oyelowo will play Robert’s character in the upcoming film.
