Traders at Gatundu South market celebrated former President Uhuru Kenyatta with a heartfelt song highlighting their difficulties since he left power.

Mr Kenyatta who celebrated his 62nd birthday on October 26, 2023, was serenaded by the women who emotionally sang to him Wanjiru wa Waya’s Nikwanyitanire song.

The hit details a mother singing to the father of her children who left the relationship.

The traders mimicked the situation and dressed in red aprons, explaining that life had been unbearable since the former president handed over power to President William Ruto in September 2023.

Additionally, the women sang praises to God for keeping the former Head of State healthy.

“The problems of today are a testimony for tomorrow,” they joyfully sang.

In the spirit of celebrating Mr Kenyatta who ruled Kenya as its fourth President between 2013 and 2022, Kenyans poured in their thoughts with some wishing him a long life while others recalling his leadership style.

In his message during a casual radio interview on the day, Mr Kenyatta thanked Kenyans of goodwill for celebrating and remembering him.

Kenyans have been lamenting over the high cost of living over the past year since President Ruto assumed power.

The increase in taxation by Ruto’s administration has made things more difficult specifically with the increase in fuel prices and other commodities. The high prices have partly been attributed to an increase in taxes by the government.

While Kenyans have resorted to adjusting their needs, the harsh economic times have left businesses in struggling mode. Others have had to close down.

As a ripple effect to the higher petrol prices, public service vehicles have also hiked fares, while the cost of other amenities such as electricity have also increased tenfold.

In the latest review by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) for October 15, 2023, Super Petrol is retailing at Sh217.36 from Sh211.64.

Diesel, on the other hand, was increased to Sh205.47 from Sh200.99, while kerosene was increased to Sh203.06 from Sh202.61 per litre.

Coincidentally, President Ruto was elected on the platform of lowering the cost of living and creation of jobs.
