Makwatta: I will share my cash award with team mates

Ulinzi Stars striker John Makwatta says he will share his player of the month Sh 50,000 cash reward with his team mates.

The player paid glowing tribute to his team mates after receiving the SportPesa/SJAK player of the month award on Tuesday at the Afraha Stadium, Makwatta said without his colleagues he would not even have been half the man he is now.

“Definitely, I can’t share the trophy or the TV with them, but the cash. We will celebrate together. They have pushed me to where I am today and without them I wouldn’t have scored the goals I have scored. I want to thank them for their support and encouragement,” Makwatta said.

The former City Stars man was accorded a military-style guard of honour by his team mates as he received the award.

BEST PLAYER

Makwatta now aims to work harder and help the team win this season’s premier league title.

“I want to see to it that my goals help the team win something this year. This award is a motivation for me to work harder. I feel very humbled and honoured to be voted the best player in the league. It is a huge feat for me,” he added.

Makwatta singled out his former team mate at City Stars Boniface Onyango as one who inspires him most.

“We have been with Boniface since our days at City Stars and being more experienced than I am, he has always guided me. He advices and corrects me when I am wrong. Internationally, I look up to my good friend Antony ‘Baggio’ Mbugua who currently plays in Israel with Hapoel Jerusalem,” he added.

Makwatta has scored seven goals so far and netted in all Ulinzi Stars matches in the month of April, hitting five within that period in addition to two assists.
