Man arrested at Uhuru’s home charged with terrorism

A man was on Wednesday charged with terrorism after he was arrested at President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Gatundu home.

The suspect, Said Mirre Siyad, was arrested on Tuesday while allegedly carrying out surveillance in preparation for a “terrorist attack”.

President Kenyatta’s Gatundu home is usually under round the clock surveillance by the para-military General Service Unit. It remains unclear how the suspect accessed the residence.

Mr Said was produced in court Wednesday and police requested to detain him for further investigations.

Prosecutor Daniel Karuri told the court that the suspect did not explain what he was doing at the President’s residence.

He said further investigations were being carried out as he is believed to have associates who were yet to be arrested.

Mr Karuri said investigators needed more time to extract call data from the suspect’s mobile phone and this might require them to travel to West Pokot.

He said Mr Siyad was arrested on Tuesday and handed to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit on Wednesday.

The court granted the application to detain him pending investigations.

Mr Siyad is among eight terrorism suspects who appeared in court on Tuesday, including three detained by the public at Gikomba Market.
