A man who is reported to have roughed up his step mother and destroyed her phone in the process was charged at Kibera law courts with assault and causing malicious damage to property.

Kelvin Kimani is facing two counts of assault after reportedly beating up his step mother Ruth Mumbe and her sister Irene Kaumo Nzuki at Kibangare in Westlands, Nairobi, on April 14, 2021.

He is also accused of destroying her mobile phone, a fryer and a subwoofer all valued at Sh77,300 on the same date.

The suspect’s mother and Mumbe had quarreled over the husband earlier in the day and the matter was reported at Kitsuru chief’s office where it was settled.

At around mid-day, Kimani allegedly went to Mumbe’s food kiosk and started asking her why she was disturbing his mother.

A brief argument ensued between the two before Kimani allegedly started pouring food and water on the floor.

He is said to have poured tea and cooked rice before Mumbe attempted to restrain him but he allegedly turned to her with blows.

Kimani is said to have gone further to assault Mumbe with a piece of wood injuring her on the hand and ribs.

Mumbe’s sister intervened to rescue her but she was also allegedly attacked and assaulted by Kimani.

The suspect is said to have allegedly smashed the subwoofer and Mumbe’s phone before he destroyed the fryer. The complainants reported the matter to police.

Kimani denied the charges before resident magistrate William Tullel of Kibera law courts.

He was freed on a cash bail of Sh50,000 and alternative bond of Sh100,000.

The case will be mentioned on February 24.
