A man reportedly cornered stealing laptops at the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI) offices in Nairobi has been charged at Kibera law court with burglary and theft.

Denish Achacha was charged with stealing a laptop worth Sh80, 000 belonging to KIRDI at the institute’s offices in South C in Nairobi on March 9.

Achacha was also charged with stealing another laptop belonging to KIRDI employee Bevin Kundu worth Sh70, 000.

The suspect was also charged with breaking into a building and committing a felony namely stealing.

Kundu had left the office locked as she went and was shocked to find the door opened upon return in the company of her colleague.

Upon entry, they found Achacha inside and after checking the office they found their laptops missing from their desks. They stopped him from leaving and raised an alarm.

People in other offices joined them and detained Achacha. He was allegedly found with the two laptops inside his bag and police were called in. He was arrested and taken to Akila Police station.

Achacha denied the charges before senior resident magistrate Renee Kitangwa and claimed that he was brutally assaulted while seeking services at the offices and was not given proper medication at a hospital he was taken to after the arrest.

He said a medical personnel had recommended a CT scan of his head which was not done.

Ms Kitangwa released Achacha on a Sh200, 000 bond with an alternative cash bail of a similar amount and ordered he be taken to hospital.

The case will be mentioned on March 24.
