Man City considering making a bid for Wanyama

Carling Cup winners Manchester City are reported to be weighing up a bid for Southampton’s Kenyan captain Victor Wanyama at the end of the season.

It is well known that the 2012 Premer League champions are looking for  a defensive midfielder, and those options now appear to have narrowed down to Cheick Tiote of Newcastle and Victor Wanyama.

While City manager Manuel Pellegrini has an outstanding attacking midfield duo at his disposal with Fernandinho and Yaya Toure, there has been something missing from the side ever since Nigel de Jong was sold to AC Milan.

Former England midfielder Gareth Barry, who is on loan from City to Everton, is excelling in that role under Roberto Martinez at Goodison Park, but is unlikely to return to the Etihad Stadium, whilst Spaniard Javi Garcia has yet to really impress when given the chance in midfield.

This has led to speculation that Pellegrini will make a concerted effort to bring in a natural defensive midfielder at the end of the season.

Both players have impressed this season for their respective clubs, and it is noticeable that Southampton’s results dipped markedly when Wanayma was out of the side injured in December and January.
