A 32- years old jilted man who allegedly torched his ex-girlfriend’s house in Mukuru kwa Reuben slums in Nairobi after a break up was charged at the Makadara Law Courts with arson contrary to section 332 (a) of the penal code.

Mr. James Getuno was charged with willfully and unlawfully setting fire to a dwelling house valued at Sh200,000 belonging to Hellena Kanini Kisaingu on January 5, 2023.

The accused person had warned that he would stab Ms. Kisaingu with a knife, and if she escaped, he would burn down her house.

Fearing for her life, Ms. Kisaingu slept at her friend’s house after closing her business.

At about 3 am on January 5, she received information that her house was on fire. She proceeded to the scene where members of the public put out the fire. She could not salvage anything.

Mr. Getuno was traced and arrested after Ms. Kisaingu reported to the police and recorded a statement.

The accused person denied the charges before resident magistrate Mercy Thibaru.

He was released on a cash bail of Sh100, 000 and an alternative bond of Sh200, 000.

The case will be mentioned on February 3 before the hearing starts on May 8.
