A man who beat up his wife for failing to wash their son’s school uniform will have to pay a fine of Sh 20,000 or spend a year in prison.

Mr Kelisa Letiwa was convicted by a Maralal court on Monday after he admitted the charges.

The incident happened on December 31, 2015 at the couple’s home in Matakwani village in Samburu East Sub County.

The court heard that the complainant, Mrs Emily Letiwa, was preparing supper when she was ambushed by her husband who arrived home  drunk.

NO CRIMINAL RECORD

The accused is said to have used a rungu to assault his wife.

The Principal Magistrate Mr Charles Ndegwa heard that the accused also threatened to beat his children after they attempted to intervene.

The Prosecutor Inspector John Mugo said the accused did not have previous criminal records asked the magistrate to treat him as a first offender.

In mitigation, Mr Letiwa pleaded for leniency saying that he didn’t know a minor quarrel he had engaged his wife over unwashed school uniform of their son would land him in court.

The accused could not raise the fine immediately and was escorted to Maralal prison.
