Man in court for assaulting and scalding his ex-wife with hot water


A man who allegedly beat up and scalded his ex-wife with hot water at her house in Pangani, Nairobi is facing assault charges.

Ezekiel Kikwatha is accused of willfully assaulting Betty Mwathi and causing her bodily harm on September 3, 2022.

The two were living separately when Ms Mwathi returned to her house from a church function only to find Mr Kikwatha in the house going through her phone.

When she questioned the accused on what he was doing in his house he turned violent asking her why she was returning home late.

An argument ensued before the accused person allegedly grabbed the complainant and assaulted her.

Ms Mwathi tried to grab the phone to call a watchman to rescue her but Mr Kikwatha took a kettle that had hot water and poured the water on her.

She escaped from the house and went to a hospital where she sought treatment before reporting the matter at Pangani Police Station.

The accused person later returned to the complainant’s house and the two agreed to solve their dispute at Pangani Police Station where Mr Kikwatha was arrested.

The suspect denied the charges before Makadara Chief Magistrate Francis Kyambia. He claimed he had gone to his ex-wife’s house to check on his two sons after he heard they had been neglected.

He also claimed they had been married for six years before they divorced, adding that they had started a reconciliation process while at the police station in an effort to settle the matter out of court.

Mr Kikwatha pleaded with Mr Kyambia to remand him at Pangani Police Station to allow him reconcile with Ms Mwathi. But Mr Kyambia told him that he will be free to pursue the out of court settlement after attaining bail and bond terms.

The accused was released on a bond of Sh50,000 and an alternative cash bail of Sh20,000. The matter will be mentioned on June 13, 2023 before hearing starts on July 5, 2023.
