Martha Karua: DCI used trickery to sneak out Maina Njenga from their offices

Azimio la Umoja principal, Martha Karua, has called out the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) of using trickery to sneak out former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga from their offices in Nairobi.

In tweet, Ms Karua claimed that the DCI was violating Njenga’s right to legal representation. She also expressed fear that they would prejudice Mr Njenga’s right to a fair trial.

“DCI this afternoon used trickery to separate Maina Njenga from his lawyers who included several Azimio principals and sneaked him out of their offices in Kiambu Road to an undisclosed destination,” Karua said.

On Thursday, police lobbed teargas at Mr Njenga supporters at DCI headquarters after they had blocked the entrance, chanting and demanding his release.

The former Mungiki leader surrendered himself to the DCIs for questioning over the alleged recovery of two firearms and rolls of bhang from his home in Wanyororo, Nakuru County.

Earlier, DCI had reported that they deployed a special team of detectives to find the politician whom they say had gone into hiding following the incident.

“The former Mungiki leader is wanted for questioning over recovery of bhang and firearms at a home linked to him. Any information on the whereabouts of the ex-Mungiki leader who has since gone into hiding maybe volunteered to the DCI,” the DCI has said in a statement.

According to the sleuths, during the raid conducted at Mr Njenga’s homes last week, eight suspects aged between 37 and 54 were arrested. Police said they also found three rounds of 9mm blank ammunition hidden in one of the rooms at the residence.

“One of the firearms recovered was a homemade pistol while the other one was a Tokarev whose serial number had been defaced,” the DCI said in a statement on their social media accounts.
