Masked gunmen attack Garissa University
Masked gunmen attacked Garissa University in a early morning raid on Thursday.
Gunfire could be heard from the university premises.
Reports indicate that the gunmen have taken hostages inside the complex after raiding the university.
A statement from Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said:
“Armed attackers forced their way into Garissa University by shooting at the guards manning the main gate at around 5.30am.
“The attackers shot indiscriminately inside the compound. Police who were guarding the student’s hostels responded and engaged the gunmen in a fierce shootout.
“However the attackers retreated and gained entry into the hostels. Joint force currently engaged in flushing out the gunmen from the hostels.”
Kenya Red Cross officials say two policemen and a student have been injured by the attackers and have been rushed to hospital.
Kenya Defence Forces have arrived at the university.
Garissa University College (GUC), the only public institution of higher learning in the region, opened its doors in 2011 for about 450 students.
