Ongata Line Company Limited has been deregistered as a public transport provider over violation of regulations.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) said it had taken such action as the company had failed to adhere to the rules even after numerous meetings with it over the matter.

This comes a day after a matatu belonging to the sacco was involved in an accident on Lang’ata Road, Nairobi, leaving four people dead and six others injured.

Four are in critical condition at Kenyatta National Hospital and St Mary’s Hospital in Lang’ata.

In a letter to the authority, dated September 9, the sacco outlined actions it had taken to end violation of licensing regulations.

Among the steps taken were issuing of warning letters to employees and withdrawal of licences of affected crews. These measures were taken in a bid to bring order in the operations of the company.

In a shocking revelation, the firm, which has over 240 employees, said it had on several occasions reported violation of regulations by its crews to the Police Traffic Department but no action had been taken.

The NTSA has advised the public to avoid boarding vehicles belonging to the sacco as they will be impounded if they are found operating in defiance of the authority’s directive.
