Matatus yet to fit cashless fare payment system

Matatu owners are still reluctant to implement the cashless fare payment system even as the deadline is fast approaching.

A spot check revealed that only a few vehicles had the system in place with only two months to go to the July deadline. “Implementation rate is very slow.

They however have until July to comply. That should be the next step after fitting speed governors and other urgent requirements,” said Matatu Welfare Association Chairman Dickson Mbugua.

Among PSV Saccos in the process of executing the requirement include Compliant Moa. It dropped the BebaPay card in preference for a new entrant, 1963 Jinice service providers.

Mike Ngugi, Compliant Moa supervisor said the sacco intended to roll out the programme before the end of next week.

“We opted for the new provider because it was cheap. All our vehicles will have the system by next week,” he said.
