Students of Mama Ngina Girls High School in Mombasa got a pleasant surprise when acting Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i visited the school and bought them lunch worth Sh100,000.

The minister was in the school where he met Leonidah Kanini, 14, who had contemplated committing suicide to escape hopelessness.

The girl from Makueni, who scored 373 marks in Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examination last year, had been unable to join Form One due to lack of school fees. Kanini, emerged the best pupil in Kalimakoi Primary School in the national examinations.

The story of the poor girl was highlighted by the Sunday Nation. She was enrolled in a counselling program at Makindu Sub-County Hospital after she contemplated committing suicide over her parents’ inability to enroll her in secondary school.

SCHOOL FEES

Kanini has since had her school fees paid for by well-wishers and is now a student at Mama Ngina Girls High School in Mombasa.

“I am happy to be in school. I promise to work hard and become a surgeon. The teachers and students have been very supportive. I arrived on Tuesday,” the shy student told Dr Matiang’i.

The CS talked to her for 10 minutes urging her to work hard.

“Don’t bother about school fees. Concentrate on your education. We will cater for your needs,” the CS said.

The CS later offered the students ‘lunch’ amounting to Sh100, 000.
